If the Big Walk microphone is not working, update the game first and test while standing close to another player. House House patched quiet microphone handling on August 7, 2026, but intentionally kept the short distance at which voices fade away.
Distinguish a bug from proximity design
Voices are designed to fade over distance, echo in corridors, muffle through walls, and crackle through walkie-talkies. A player who is clear up close but disappears after moving away is experiencing the intended proximity system rather than a failed microphone.
The first voice patch made quiet input setups louder at close and medium distances. The developer did not increase the overall hearing distance or add separate voice and background sliders in that patch.
Apply only verified checks
Install the latest game update on every system in the group, then restart the session and test two players side by side. Keep the listener away from a soundproof barrier and do not use a distant radio test as the initial microphone check.
Avoid unverified port lists, third-party voice modifications, or claims that Big Walk always uses a particular operating-system input path. The developer's published fix addressed normalization for quiet setups; it did not document those extra remedies as official requirements.
Use the supported no-microphone path
Big Walk can be completed without a microphone. The official FAQ says in-game text chat has the same features and restrictions as voice chat, including distance, soundproof barriers, and interaction with walkie-talkies.
Use text chat while diagnosing the input problem instead of moving the group to external voice. House House specifically recommends staying inside the game's communication system because restricted communication is part of puzzle design.
